There seems to be a universal law that all your weird traits become secret factors of your success once you make it.

Consider this:

James Potter was a troublemaker growing up--reeking havoc on Hogwarts and becoming the bane of Snape's existence. Being such a rule breaker lead James to sneaking around with his friends as "Misters Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail." They learned a staggering amount of illegal magic, plus devised the Maurader's Map.

Had they followed the status quo, none of this ever would have happened.
